We Get Questions...

Q and A
Q.)  Can the R14 and R15 return reason codes be used to return non-government transactions?
A.)   At one time the ACH Rules stated that the following return codes were to be used for government items only, but that language has since been removed and these codes can now be used to return other payments, when appropriate:

  • R14 - Representative Payee Deceased or Unable to Continue in That Capacity
  • R15 - Beneficiary or Account Holder Deceased
Keep in mind, RDFIs must use the code that most closely defines the reason for the return. For example, if the account is closed, a transaction should be returned using the R02 code. See the Table of Return Reason Codes that begins on page OR141 in the 2021 Nacha Operating Rules for additional descriptive information related to R14, R15 and more.
